DETAILED ITINERARY: 3 Days Sahara Desert Tour from fes

Day 1: Fes → Ifrane → Azrou → Ziz Valley → Merzouga

Your adventure begins early morning with pickup from your Fes accommodation. The first leg of the journey takes you south through the Middle Atlas Mountains to Ifrane (1,665m), known as “Little Switzerland” for its distinctive Alpine architecture and clean streets. Here, you’ll explore the manicured gardens and take photos with the famous lion statue, carved by a German prisoner during WWII.

Continuing to Azrou, you’ll visit the cedar forest, home to the largest and oldest cedar trees in Morocco, some over 600 years old. Here, you’ll encounter the resident Barbary macaques, an endangered species unique to North Africa. The journey proceeds to Midelt, nestled between the Middle and High Atlas Mountains, where you’ll enjoy lunch featuring local specialties.

In the afternoon, you’ll cross the dramatic Tizi N’Talghamt Pass (1,907m), offering spectacular views of the changing landscape. The route takes you through the Ziz Valley, where you’ll stop at a panoramic viewpoint to admire the vast palm grove oasis stretching as far as the eye can see. Begin the journey back north, first stopping at Rissani, the historic capital of Tafilalet and birthplace of the Alaouite dynasty. Explore the traditional souk, known for its dates, spices, and handmade crafts. Continue through Erfoud, famous for its fossil workshops, where you can observe artisans crafting decorative items from ancient marine fossils.

Travel through the picturesque Ziz Valley again, this time from a different perspective, before stopping in Midelt for lunch. The afternoon drive takes you back through the Middle Atlas Mountains, offering last glimpses of Morocco’s diverse landscapes before arriving in Fes in the evening.
